THE  STORY:
When a vivacious half-breed girl named Pearl is sent to live with the Texas land baron, Senator McCanles, conflict abruptly arises. Hot-blooded Pearl captures the attention of the Senator's sons: upright Jesse and fiery Lewt. Soon both of the brothers are vying for her attention, which leads to betrayal, wild desert shoot-outs and a lusty love-hate relationship between Pearl and one of the brothers.

BEHIND THE SCENES:
Greg has become enamoured with horses largely due to Ralph McCutcheon, owner and trainer of Dice, the wonder horse of "Duel in the Sun." Horses, McCutcheon assured Greg, are smarter and better companions than dogs. They just don't have a chance to prove it because people never keep them around the house. Greg would say, "When we build our ranch, we'll have doors big enough for horses to go wandering through [or at least goats]." To that Greta, his wife at the time, replied: "And I suppose a pony on Jonathan's bed?" So says Greg: "Well, he won't take much space, honey. Horses sleep standing up." How can you argue with that?

THE AWARDS:
Jennifer Jones and Lillian Gish were both nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress Oscars.
